This past February, Maryland got hit with a large snow storm. When rumors of possible snow days coming up hit the halls of Walkersville, students and teachers grew excited at the day off. Then the unexpected happened: schools all across FCPS called for almost a week off.
While Walkersville had four days off, other schools had more. Students and staff at WHS took advantage of this time off, taking time to catch up with work, friends, and themselves. From January 26-29th, and the 2 hour delay on the 30th, people had lots of time to dedicate to whatever they wanted.

Eli Nutakor, a sophomore at WHS, didn’t quite stay at home: “Even with the mountains of snow on the ground, I was able to walk around with some of my friends to their houses .That time was honestly the most fun I had during winter,” she explained. “I was happy I finally had time off, could be around the people I love, and actually feel relaxed.” Sounds like an excellent time!

Like many others, Ciara Reddington went sledding with her friends and neighbors. Other students were snowed in their houses. Some took these days to stay warm inside, like Megan Muncy, who spent her days snugging with her cat, Luna. “I have a heated blanket, so Luna spent the day in my room. She does like the outside though, so I took her out for just a minute to witness snowfall,” she shared.
“I made ice cream using the snow on the outside of the bowl,” mentioned Emily Novus. She also went sledding and shoveled snow, “but for the most part [I was] getting some more sleep and catching up on schoolwork.” When asked if she minded the extra days added onto the year she replied that while she didn’t mind the days off, she did mind losing part of summer break: “I wouldn’t want to stay in school longer than usual, since with the days off we’re almost halfway into June.”
Tanya Hernandez said, “I stayed inside and didn’t really think about the year being extended,” being happy to just have the unexpected time off. Similarly, freshman Maggie Mayfield said, “I stayed at home and slept. When it was safer to go out I hung out with friends. I was really enjoying the time off.”

Skyler Hellman also explained how he spent his days, “I played video games, watched anime, and mostly slept in.” Jayden Roderick shared the senior perspective: “I was enjoying the snow, playing games mostly and writing. The make up days don’t matter because seniors will graduate the same day no matter what!” Angelina Crowder shares the same excitement: “I spend the snow days [chilling or working.] I am happy that we’re getting a ton of snow days because it means seniors are missing school without the year being pushed back. Very grateful for them!” With freshmen through seniors, and even teachers enjoying these days off, it seems like WHS has an overall positive overlook of these snowy vacations!
With all of Walkersville’s snow days taken, it’s been reported that make-up days will start to be taken off of Spring Break. Maryland was due to get hit with more snow, with schools having 2/23 off and offices going in 2 hours late. It looks like more snow is on the way for students and teachers, which may once again change the end of the school year or reduce vacation time. Depending on your grade and plans this might be a good thing, but it also might ruin your vacation. There’s not much we can do about it, so enjoy the ‘snowy fun’ while you can!
